FIRST LOOK: Farmstead Cheeses and Wines in Montclair Village

Deb Wandell, Chronicle Staff Writer Friday, May 30, 2008

The owners of Alameda's Farmstead Cheeses and Wines opened their second outpost Tuesday in Oakland's Montclair Village.

Jeff Diamond and Carol Huntington took over a former cigar store, giving the 1,200-foot split-level space a sunny makeover with attractive wood shelving for 500 wines, half imported and half that are less than $25.

The cheese collection will soon grow to 150 cheeses, most cut to order. Unusual finds on a recent visit included Testun al Barolo, an aged cow's and sheep's milk cheese from Italy that's coated in the must of Nebbiolo grapes, and oak-smoked Cheddar from England. There's also a small selection of crackers, olive oils and vinegars.

As in Alameda, Diamond and Huntington will offer educational wine, cheese and pairings events at the shop.
