First off, there's Tintero Grangia Vino Bianco NV, 100% Favorita (what a great name for a grape!) from Piedmont, Italy. From Kermit Lynch, a dry, ever so slightly sparkling white wine. 100% Favorita (a version of Vermentino) with an added touch of Moscato for aromatics. All those great little starter courses they serve in Piedmont are perfect with Grangia. It is crystal clear in color with a palate as refreshing as a mountain stream and flavors of prickly pear, lemongrass, and white pepper. Light, easy to drink, and low in alcohol.
Then, there's Tariquet Classic - an organic southern French blend of indigenous grapes Ugni Blanc and Colombard. Superbly intense for a dry fruity white, its bouquet reveals floral and citrus aromas with nice touches of tropical fruit. Despite the tropical theme it's crisp and focused, yet quite flavorful at the same time. To prevent oxidation, the grapes are taken directly from the vines to the vats in isothermal tanks. This is a very easy-drinking wine, perfect as an apéritif and with shellfish.
I flipped when I tasted Bodegas Enguera Pelta last year in Spain. From Valencia, this 80% Tempranillo and 20% Monastrell was raised in stainless steel. It exhibits a fragrant nose of underbrush, earth, blackberry, and blueberry pie. Surprisingly rich and deep for a wine of this price, it should drink well for another three years. Purple opaque red. Medium bodied wine, rich in structure, fleshy, expansive with blue and black berries on the finish.
Then, there's Bodegas Enguera DisTinto, another wine I flipped for in Spain. 50% Tempranillo and 50% Syrah, this fleshy, nicely balanced wine has been aged in oak for a few months before bottling. The color is vivid, deep cherry, very brilliant, beautiful, and the nose has violets, roses with lightly stewed fruits. Rich, concentrated, persistent mouth feel, with a long-lasting finish. Both Pelta and DisTinto are made by Pedro Perez, who founded Bodegas Enguera in 1999. He currently owns 445 acres of vineyard land; mostly Monastrell, Tempranillo and Verdil, with small quantities of Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon.
This is the third consecutive month that we've presented a Chilean wine in the bargain club - and Ventisquerro Reserva Pinot Noir offers up lots of varietal correctness and a very friendly price. Deep ruby red color, with the aroma of ripe cherry, raspberry, currant and strawberries that mingle with soft notes of vanilla, coffee, tobacco and toffee. Expressive, nice acidity, soft structure and fresh juicy attack. At the end, its velvety aftertaste shows some red fruit notes mingled with elegant vanilla touch.
Finally, we've got a bargain charmer - McGuigans' Shiraz-Viognier from Langhorne Creek in Australia. A soft medium weight wine with a juicy berry and background vanilla flavors. The Viognier adds not only a floral dimension, but also results in a silky soft finish. Blending Syrah and Viognier is very common in Cote Rotie
