Wine Dinners

Wine Dinner August 27

We're pleased to present what purports to be a great wine event at a great venue - An Evening with Ed Kurtzman , to be held at Southie, the new joint owned by the folks at Wood Tavern, on Monday, August  27th at 8:00 p.m.  Tickets for four courses and six wines is $63 per person, plus taxes and tip, a total of $90 per person, ($85 per person for wine club members in good standing).

Tickets for four courses (including a Farmstead Cheese course)  and wines is $69 per person, plus taxes and tip, for a total of $90 per person, ($85 per person for Wine Club members in good standing).

This event is designed to introduce you to one of California's best winemakers, to show off one of Oakland's coolest joints  - in a relaxed and intimate setting.  You might not sit with your friends (the place has a fixed seating layout and most seating is intimate - two person tables, with some bar seating added in), but you'll have a great time sipping, munching and learning.

Our last event at Southie was an unqualified smash, it sold out in a few days, and a good time was had by all.

ROAR's Adam Francioni will also be in attendance.

Prepaid reservations are a necessity, and can be made by calling Farmstead Cheeses and Wines at 510 864 9463.  There are only a few dozen places available, and this event will sell out quickly - don't delay.

Southie is located right next door to the Wood Tavern, at 6311 College Avenue, Oakland CA.

We'll be tasting:

  • August West Chardonnay, Russian River Valley, 2010

Ed Kurtzman is gifted winemaker with a talent for crafting elegantly structured, cool climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, Utilizing the extensive experience gained working for such esteemed wineries as Chalone and Testarossa, Ed has refined his style and techniques, effortlessly fusing his intimate understanding of California Pinot Noir with a classic and gentle Burgundian approach to winemaking.  Ed’s interest in wine began as an undergraduate at the University of Massachusetts in the late 1980s while working at a large retail wine store. He later moved to California and sought employment as a wine wholesaler. Realizing his calling, he enrolled in the enology program at University California Fresno. To earn money, he was reportedly one of the best taxi drivers in San Francisco during the years of his wine studies. After graduation, he had stints at Bernardus, Chalone, Fort Ross and Testarossa before settling into his current winemaking positions with August West, Freeman, ROAR and Sandler Wine Company.  Ed really has a touch with Pinot Noir and his wines are a guarantee of quality in the bottle.

He's also an unrepentant Deadhead.
