How About a 90 point Montefalco Rosso for the Lowest Price in the USA?!?!?
This week's selection : Arnoldo Caprai Montefalco Rosso DOC 2010, red wine blend of Sangiovese and Sagrantino from Perugia in Umbria, Italy.
Montefalco Rosso is produced from Sangiovese, Merlot and Sagrantino grapes, a local varietal.
Los Angeles Times: "I've always loved this Sangiovese with a touch of Sagrantino and Merlot in the blend. It's from the Umbrian hilltop town of Montefalco and the winery Arnaldo-Caprai has always made one of the best. The 2010 vintage is no exception, bringing a full-bodied red with notes of cherries and cassis, a fine perfume and gentle tannins. Pull the cork on this one for a roast duck or goose, or a crown roast of pork or beef."
In 1971, Arnaldo Caprai bought the Val di Maggio estate in Montefalco, in the region of Umbria, fulfilling his lifelong dream to produce a wine of his own and discover the potential of the local varieties—particularly Sagrantino, a native grape that has grown in the region for over 400 years.
The Montefalco region, an area rich in history and winemaking tradition, was historically known for its sweet wines, particularly Orvieto, a white wine, and Sagrantino, a red, made using the passito method, which helps concentrate sugars and balance the natural tannin of the grape.
In 1988, Arnaldo's son Marco Caprai took over managing the winery and brought with him a passion and determination to produce top quality wines from the region. Over the past decade, Marco's commitment has led to groundbreaking research and experimentation on clonal selection, new trellising systems, high density plantings and huge improvements in the quality of Sagrantino made as a dry wine. Today, the Arnaldo Caprai winery is the acknowledged leader in the production of top quality Sagrantino di Montefalco, a wine produced exclusively from Sagrantino, and along with numerous awards over the years, was Voted Winery of the Year 2006 from Gambero Rosso.
The winery, located in the area of Montefalco, holds approximately 370 acres of vineyards (136 are currently in production) and produces both red and white wines.
90 points, Wine Enthusiast: "This blend of Sangiovese, Sagrantino and Merlot delivers a smooth mouthfeel and ripe fruit flavors, with background tones of black licorice and moist pipe tobacco. A spot of crisp acidity appears on the finish."
90 points, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous "Good deep red with ruby highlights. Expressive aromas of raspberry, violet and tea leaf on the perfumed, sangiovese-dominated nose. Dense and sweet, boasting lovely depth and plenty of framing energy to its blueberry and sour red cherry flavors. Building but polished tannins coat the palate on the long, bright finish. Very impressive Montefalco Rosso."
