This week's selection: Michele Chiarlo Barbaresco 2010 Reyna, a Nebbiolo from Piedmont, Italy.
Michele Chiarlo's long list of wines includes interesting selections from Barbaresco as well. The 2010 Barbaresco Reyna is designed to show a bigger and lusher side of Barbaresco, and it does indeed do that. Soft oaky layers are topped by ripe fruit, dark cherry, leather and cigar box. The richness and plushness of the wine is immediately apparent and makes this suitable for near-term enjoyment
The vineyards lie on the steep, southwest facing Langhe hillsides. Grapes are harvested an average of 10 to 15 days later than normal, resulting in extremely rich musts high in sugar and lower in acidity. Temperature controlled fermentation is followed by malolactic fermentation and aging in French Allier and Slavonian oak followed by additional aging in bottle.
Pure, high-toned red berry aromas and flavors with spice notes surround a core of vivid acidity and moderate tannins. Similar in character to Barolo, but more delicate, this Barbaresco has great aging potential.
"Starts out soft and supple, offering cherry, menthol, white pepper and tea notes. Firms up, staying balanced and graceful, with tobacco and tea accents gracing the finish. Best from 2015 through 2028." 90 Points Wine Spectator
"A succulent, soft Barbaresco with ripe tannins and a juicy finish. Plenty of dried-strawberry and walnut character. Friendly and delicious now. " 90 Points James Suckling
